Tool & Die Machinist

Location: Hampton, Georgia
Job Type: Full-time
Shift: 1st Shift (7:00AM – 3:30PM)

Job Summary:

  • Sets up and operates various types of manual and CNC tool room machining equipment, such as mills, lathes, surface grinders and band saws. Performs a variety of machining functions to support the construction, maintenance/sharpening and repair of custom die sets, work holding fixtures and machine components.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Reads blueprint, work order and tooling instructions for specifications such as hole locations and size, feed rates, setting speeds and cutting tools to be used.
  • Selects proper grinding machine and wheels to sharpen cutting or punching tooling.
  • Operates grinding equipment to grind tooling to proper size, angle and point.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.
  • Sets up and operates manual and CNC machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.
  • Ability to write and edit simple CNC programs via machine controls.
  • Lifts machined parts manually or with hoist and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable using devices such as vises, V-blocks, fixtures and angle plates.
  • Smoothes flat and contoured surfaces and power grinders, and fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms.
  • Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
  • Heat treats tools or parts.
  • Store and retrieve tools, fixtures and supplies within the tool crib.
  • Cleans machines, tooling, and parts.
  • Performs machine maintenance as required and checks oil levels daily.
  • Maintains working area in a clean, safe and orderly condition.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Education & Experience: Two-year machine tool / machinist certificate from college or technical school; or three to four years of related Tool & Die experience; or equivalent combination of education and Tool & Die experience.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to communicate job related issues with supervisor, team leaders and other employees.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to convert decimal and fractional dimensions. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Ability to use advanced machinist handbook formulas. Ability to use a wide array of mathematical and geometric devices, such as, calculators, protractors, scales, calipers, micrometers, etc.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move 20 to 40 pounds and occasionally handle material over 40 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
