Established in Birmingham, Alabama as an electric motor and transformer repair shop by W.E. Mitchell, demonstrating early innovation with our first manufactured product—a motor operator.

1940

Strategic Relocation

Relocated to Hampton, Georgia, acquiring Henderson Foundry & Machine Works to accommodate growth and expand manufacturing capabilities.

1941-1945

Wartime Recognition

Pivoted operations to support the WWII effort, manufacturing bomb casings and firing pins for the U.S. military, earning the prestigious Army-Navy "E" award for munitions excellence.

1950s-1970s

Global Expansion

Experienced significant growth serving electric utilities worldwide, requiring multiple facility expansions (1952, 1959, 1964, and 1976).

1980s-1990s

Breakthrough Innovation

Accelerated innovation with groundbreaking developments including the first substation class expulsion power fuses, the Amplitact® rotating blade disconnect switch, and the world's first 1 million+ volt RDA 1100 kV double-end break switch.

2004

Global Acquisition

Expanded global footprint through strategic acquisition of European disconnect switch manufacturers Egic (Lyon, France) and Coelme (Venice, Italy), gaining access to European IEC Type Switches and a worldwide network of representatives.

2010s

Transmission Leadership

Established dedicated Transmission Switch Division, launching the patented ES-1 phase-over-phase switch and innovative "Substation in the Sky" solution.

2020s

Divisional Growth

Formed divisions for power systems solutions, grid services, and sensors and automation to meet the evolving needs of the industry and our customers.

2025

Smart Automation

Launched the Distribution Fault Detection Isolation and Restoration (DFDIR) solution with Smart Automation Module (SAM) and Smart Automation Management System (SAMS), introducing software solutions to help utility customers realize the benefits of smart automation.
