OPERATORS

Whether your needs require only local operation, both local and remote operation, high speed operation, high torque operation, stored energy operation, or other application Southern States has the operator to fit your requirements.

Manual Operators

There are two common types of manual operators offered by Southern States, the manual swing handle operator and the manual gear operator.  (An additional type of manual operator, the manual spade handle, is commonly supplied for use with Southern States type HRU high speed ground switch when it is purchased with a manual reset operator.)  Unless a specific manual operator is defined by the customer, Southern States selects the manual operator which best fits the given application, taking into account the switch break type, kV rating, continuous current rating, accessories (such as whip type arcing horns, load break/loop break/line drop interrupters, etc.), mounting position, mounting height, and other factors.  Southern States 30:1 ratio high efficiency gear operator, the type HOGO (an acronym for High Output Gear Operator), is very popular among customers as the gear operator of choice regardless of the manufacturer of the switch which it operates and is commonly sold as an after market accessory by Southern States After Sales & Service Department to drive many different manufacturers' switches.  If a customer requires a manual operator on an EHV switch (500 kV and above) then Southern States heavy duty gear operators, type SG-20 and type SG-50, are the application solution, producing 20,000 inch-pounds of output torque and 50,000 inch-pounds of output torque, respectively.

Motor Operators

Providing local operation and remote operation, Southern States motor operators offer users the ability to perform automated switching both at the substation and from a control center.  A wide variety of output torques and operating speeds are available to cover all the many different Southern States switch types and ratings as well as most switch types and ratings of any other switch manufacturer.  An equally large variety of accessories, both standard and optional, are available for these motor operators, and many different voltages, both AC (115 VAC, 230 VAC, and others) and DC (24 VDC, 48 VDC, 125 VDC, 250 VDC), can be chosen as the user's source supply.  Like its manual counterpart the HOGO gear operator, the Southern States type VM-1 and type VM-1SE motor operators are both commonly supplied to other switch manufacturers to drive their switches as well as being supplied into the after market to automate existing Southern States switches and the switches of essentially all other switch manufacturers, both present and past.  And, like the manual operators, Southern States will choose the proper torque and speed combination motor operator for the given switch application if a torque-speed combination is not predetermined by the customer.  The selection of the correct torque and speed combination motor operator for various applications is shown in the attached document entitled "VM-1 and VM-1SE Motor Operator Selection Chart".

Of the available types of Southern States motor operators, the VM-1 is the standard motor operator for switch applications.

For switch applications requiring stored energy operation (such as remote transmission line installations or substation installations where no control housed battery source is present) the selection is the VM-1SE, a VM-1 motor operator which has an extended cabinet whose bottom compartment houses two 12 VDC batteries which are powered by an AC to DC trickle charger located in the operator's main compartment (the batteries and trickle charger converting the normal VM-1 into the VM-1SE model).  Either 115 VAC or 230 VAC can be supplied by the customer as the source which trickle charges these two 12 VDC batteries, providing the customer with 3 stored operations from this 24 VDC battery system in the event of loss of AC source supply.
