Phase over Phase Switches

In response to today’s market need for reliable Transmission switching solutions that allow for expedited isolation of faulted transmission line sections or transmission line taps, Southern States provides a variety of traditional and innovative solutions. As utilities look to automate their transmission networks, it becomes increasingly important to have reliable switching devices that are capable of handling any switching duty including the interruption of load current and in some cases, fault current. There is also an increasing need for these switching devices to provide a reliable status (open/close) update to the system operator.

Southern States has an innovative line of products that can be applied to Transmission lines that address many of the needs which will result in increased reliability for the utilities transmission network. Some of the innovative items offered include a phase-over-phase transmission switch with positive latching contacts, the MACI® (Magnetically Actuated Close Indicator) switch attachment, the LLS® single-gap Load interrupter switch attachment, and the new “Substation in the Sky” solution customized for each application.

Load Break Switch Attachment

Traditionally, line sectionalizing of a transmission system has been accomplished using a disconnect mounted, single multi gap vacuum interrupter and/or whip, capable of only loop splitting and/or line dropping. The limited interrupting capability and required maintenance of this type of device has resulted in unwanted outages resulting in an increase in SAIDI and SAIFI minutes. Many utilities are now seeking out an alternative solution to this issue, recognizing that a fully rated, load break switch attachment will improve the system reliability and reduce unwanted outages. The Southern States LLS®, single gap SF6 interrupter, is capable of 2000 full load operations which significantly reduces maintenance requirements and eliminates switch or interrupt damage if an automated switching command requests operation that is outside of the capability of the switch attachment.

Air Disconnect

Southern States has developed a line of products to address common issues experienced by one-way and multi-way transmission disconnects. The ES-1 aluminum single side break switch (also available in copper) possesses a unique blade design that produces very low operating effort, positive latching in the closed position, and allows for quick and easy installation. Further, its jaw guide stop assures proper contact seating during the closing process. The ES-1 one-way and multi-way switches are available with the LLS® Load break attachment.

For pole mounted transmission line sectionalizers, Southern States’ Low Profile Mounted Disconnect is available as well. The low height configuration allows for mounting to existing structures in current phase spacing. Additionally, the bracket provides flexibility for banding or through bolting during installation.

Southern States can customize any of their switch designs to the users mounting configuration requirements. Examples include fully assembled and adjusted unitized switch designs that minimize installation times, simplify field assembly and adjustment, and thus reduce costs. The unitized EV-2 and EC-1V have provided solutions for numerous market applications and offer valuable, minimized phase spacing. Attachments, such as the LLS®-I, and accessories are also available for these unitized offerings.

MACI® Attachment

Verifying proper blade depth and rotation of a high voltage disconnect switch closure has created challenges for ground level operators and transmission network reliability. Southern States’ MACI® introduces patented magnetic technology to provide highly-visible, foolproof indication of a proper switch closure, thus minimizing costs associated with unplanned power outages. Its reflective “closed” pattern provides visible assurance up to 100 ft away and it will not interfere with operation, even in icy conditions.
